Heart Failure

Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle is unable to pump blood effectively. This can lead to a backup of blood and fluid accumulation in the lungs, resulting in shortness of breath. Various heart conditions can gradually weaken or stiffen the heart, making it difficult to fill and pump blood properly. Common causes include narrowed arteries and high blood pressure.
Effective treatment can alleviate the symptoms of heart failure and may extend the lives of some individuals. Adopting a healthier lifestyle can also enhance quality of life. Recommended changes include weight loss, regular exercise, reducing salt intake, and managing stress levels.

Symptoms of heart failure can develop gradually or appear suddenly. They may include:
- Shortness of breath during physical activity or while lying flat
- Fatigue and general weakness
- Swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Decreased exercise capacity
- Wheezing
- Persistent cough, possibly producing white or pink mucus with blood spots
- Abdominal swelling
- Nausea and loss of appetite
- Chest pain, particularly if heart failure is linked to a heart attack
If you are living with heart failure, there are steps you can take to enhance your heart health. Adhere to your prescribed medications, follow a low-sodium diet, remain active, monitor for sudden weight changes, attend follow-up appointments, and keep track of your symptoms.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your medications, lifestyle modifications, or any aspect of your treatment plan, don’t hesitate to consult your healthcare provider.
